Geologise This!

Wednesday 2nd April 2025 was a unique day for our Year 6 students. Our young geologists were entertained, serenaded and educated by the wonderful scientists from Geologise This!

Matt and Roberta came to visit to perform a theatre show which allowed the children to understand how they can contribute to making a change despite being so young. The show was centred around a young girl their age who petitioned to stop an oil rig from expanding and encouraged her local community to use renewable energy.  This was really lovely because every time I have taught the Frozen Kingdom Topic, the children always ask what they could do to make positive changes.

We then had a Q&A session with the actors who are also geologists. The children were given the chance to understand their line of work and turns out both scientists carried out petitions when they were in school too - one was to save their local library!

Following on from that, Year 6s met Estelle (another scientist) whose role is to search for rare species and support the conservation of the local environment.

The children then got the chance to act out as environmentalists - they had to take time to think about their roles whether it is collecting samples from the earth or meeting with other scientists and world leaders.

Finally, Year 6 were then given the chance to look at character profiles of two different people who are impacted or having an impact on the environment. One was a 12 year old Amazonian girl whose habitat is being destroyed by cattle ranching and another a head of an oil rig company. They took on the roles of these characters and wrote a song together, which they finally performed.

It was a great day! They all loved it and more importantly they understood the role they play/can play in saving something they are passionate about!
