Dairy Meadow Primary and Nursery School

Design and Technology

Hi there! My name is Mrs Uppal and I am the Design & Technology Champion here at Dairy Meadow Primary School.

Why I enjoy my area of subject responsibility:

My love for Design & Technology stems from a young age.  From playing with Lego and creating huge structures with my brothers to following my mother’s instructions in the kitchen to cook a curry for my family. Design & Technology skills have been vital to my development as a person and I continue to develop these with my own children; creating a spaceship using cardboard to making scrumptious biscuits shaped as unicorns! There is so much enjoyment in this subject and I hope the children of Dairy Meadow love it as much as I do.

What I want to achieve in my subject area:

Design & Technology is a versatile subject and takes into account many different aspects of learning.  My hope for all our children at Dairy Meadow is to become confident in using creativity and imagination, design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.  I would like them to learn how to take risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens in the future; and it all starts here, with us, at Dairy Meadow Primary School.

Things to look forward to:

We have some fantastic learning opportunities in Design & Technology coming up this year.  Our Year 2’s will be constructing beach huts connecting their learning to their Geography unit of Coastlines.  In Year 5 they will be planning an allotment area; sowing and growing vegetables to then using their produce to cook up a tasty condiment.  As well as this our Year 1’s will be given construction kits and small world figures, where they will be directed how to make a 1950's street which they will be adapting so the street represents the present day.  There will be some amazing learning taking place at Dairy Meadow, and I for one cannot wait to get it started!
